The Procedure of Breast Lift
A breast lift surgery is also known as Mastopexy. This procedure is performed to lift saggy breasts. Due to various reasons such as age, pregnancies, breastfeeding, or massive weight loss, a woman’s breasts start sagging and lose their youthful look.
If performed by an experienced cosmetic surgeon, the breasts can get a proportional shape and their youthfulness back. Women get the surgery if they have saggy breasts or their nipples point downwards. A breast lift helps restore a firmer and aesthetically pleasing shape to your sagging breasts and boosts your self-confidence.
A breast lift won’t change the size of your breasts significantly, but with a combination of procedures like breast augmentation or breast reduction, women can achieve beautiful and proportionate breasts.

The procedure of Breast Lift surgery
Breast Lift surgery is an outpatient procedure done by a board-certified plastic surgeon. During this procedure, incisions are made on the areolar region, and excess tissues beneath are removed. There is considerably less scarring which fade over time, and you can get the desired results.
Here are the surgical steps to this procedure:
- After administering general or local anesthesia, the surgeon makes incisions on the areolar region.
- The incisions can be around the areola; a periareolar incision, or vertically down from the areola to the breast crease; inframammary incision. The incisions are strategically placed by the surgeon, so that they are hidden in the periareolar region (where the light skin meets the dark skin) or underneath the breast, also known as the inframammary incision. Dr. Rajat Gupta, a board-certified plastic surgeon at RG Aesthetics, prefers Inframammary incision and find it the safest when compared to other incision sites.
- After the incisions are made, the excess tissues beneath the skin are removed.
- After that, the surgeon reshapes the rest of the tissue and repositions the nipple and areola.
- If the areola is enlarged, the surgeon removes the areola skin at the perimeter.
- The remaining skin is tightened as the incisions are closed with sutures or skin adhesives.

Who qualifies for the procedure?
A breast lift surgery isn’t for everyone. If you are considering pregnancy in the future, then you might want to delay the procedure. In pregnancy, your breasts might stretch and ruin the results of the lift. Breast lift however, doesn’t affect future breast feeding if done by an experience and board-certified plastic surgeon. An experienced surgeon will not separate the nipples from the breast tissue and hence making sure that future lactation is not affected.
A breast lift can be done for any size of breasts;however, it gives long-lasting& best results for small, sagging breasts. For larger breasts, their heavyweight might make the breasts sag again and it is generally advised to undertake breast reduction along with breast lift surgery for long-term results.
You can get surgery if:
- You have good physical health
- Your breasts are saggy, pointing downwards
- You have stretched skin or large areolas
- You have realistic expectations from the surgery
- One of your breasts falls lower than the other

What to expect from the surgery?
Here is a quick highlight of what to expect before, during, and after surgery:
Before the treatment
Before getting the treatment, you must get an in-depth consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon to decide what you expect from the surgery and the complications, if any, and the results. After the discussion, the surgeon will prescribe some blood tests to ensure that you are safe to get the surgery. The surgeon will also adjust your medication if you are taking any.
It is advised that you stop smoking a month before the treatment and continue doing so for a month after the treatment. If you take blood-thinning medicines like aspirin or anti-inflammatory, don’t take them for two weeks before the surgery. Stop taking any recreational drugs, like cocaine. And lastly, arrange for a driver to get you home after the surgery.
During the treatment
It is an outpatient surgery, so you can visit the doctor’s private practice/outpatient surgery center. The surgeon will mark the proper position for your nipple, and after that, you will be given local or general anesthesia so that you won’t feel any pain. The procedure will begin, and the surgeon will remove excess skin and tissue, then lift your breast into the marked location. If you are getting implants, the surgeon will insert them and close the incision with sutures or skin adhesive.
After the treatment
You can resume normal day-to-day activities from the very next day. You can expect to feel uncomfortable for a few days following the surgery. Your surgeon might recommend you to wear a compression bra or bandages to provide your breasts the support they need. For the first week, your surgeon might prescribe painkillers as well. After 2 -3 weeks, your sutures will be removed, and gradually, your breast will heal & take proper shape and contour.
Results of the procedure
After the surgery, the patient can see visible changes in the breast’s shape, although it may change more as the patient heals. There will be a scar considerably hidden and will become lighter with time. The surgery results in proportionate & perkier breasts with restored youthfulness.
