Does the fat grow back after liposuction?

It is common for patients to inquire about the longevity of liposuction results during consultation. Any reputable plastic surgeon understands the concern and welcomes it since it demonstrates that the patient is being realistic about the treatment outcomes. A liposuction procedure may seem attractive, but if you’re worried about the longevity of the results, this article will answer your questions.

Let us understand how the surgery is done to answer whether the fat removed during the surgery has chances of returning or not.

What is The Liposuction Procedure?

Liposuction removes excess fat from the body that hasn’t been eliminated by diet and exercise. Among all cosmetic surgery procedures, it is the third most popular in India. If performed by a qualified plastic surgeon, it has a high success rate. In fact, patients of board-certified plastic surgeon Dr Rajat Gupta, who has been doing liposuction surgery for more than two decades, mention that they are extremely satisfied with their results.

During the surgery, the surgeon makes a small incision of half a centimetre over the area from where fat will be removed. A thin tube called the cannula is used to suction out the fat. Dr Rajat Gupta uses the MicroAire and Vaser technology for superior results. Through ultrasound technology, Vaser breaks down fat and loosens it from relatively deeper areas of the body, so it can be easily removed without damaging the surrounding tissues. MicroAire is a power-assisted liposuction technology which uses reciprocating motion (back and forth movement) to help break down the fat. The power-assisted liposuction procedure using MicroAire allows better access to other areas of the body where traditional liposuction techniques are ineffective, such as arms, backs, and abdomens.

How Much Fat Can Be Removed By Liposuction?

A maximum of 3 – 5 litres of fat is removed during the liposuction procedure. The person’s weight may not be affected significantly, but the aesthetic results are certainly enhanced. It is important to note that liposuction targets only subcutaneous fat deposits and not visceral fat. The subcutaneous fat layer is found between the skin and the underlying muscle.

Despite vigorous fitness activities, subcutaneous fat does not disappear. On the other hand, visceral fat, located between the organs and near the metabolic area, is highly responsive to exercise and diet. Due to its positioning, it is not advisable to remove visceral fat during the surgery as it could pose potential risks and complications.

The Secret to Long-Term Liposuction Results

It is easier to maintain the results if one imbibes the practice of a healthy lifestyle after fat removal surgery. According to the board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr Rajat Gupta, patients who have undergone liposuction can engage in advanced exercises that target visceral fat more effectively. Taking care of your diet and managing your stress has proven to result in managing your weight post-surgery.
