Recovery after Breast Augmentation
Although its orientation is towards cosmetics, breast implant still is a complex surgery. It deserves a special mention that bodies of different patients react differently to the surgery and hence the healing process can be different for to patients.
However, there are certain care measures that each patient is recommended to take to ensure a speedy recovery after a breast augmentation procedure. Dr. Rajat Gupta, the founder of RG Aesthetics, recommends four key tips:
- Make all the preparations beforehand.
Since it is a major surgery and the recovery needs some time, you should hire a ride back home in advance and it is even better if someone from the family or friends stays accompanies you for the first 6 to 8 hours.
It is important to note that the breast augmentation surgery is performed after the patients are placed under general anesthesia and some of its effects continue to be on them after the surgery for up to 24 hours. That is why it is recommended to arrange in advance for assistance for household chores and care for children for the first day after the surgery. It will be helpful if a friend or relative checks in on you every day in case any help is required during your recovery after breast augmentation.
- Be on top of post-surgery medication and care.
Although, there is hardly any likelihood of even a minor discomfort, refrain from using over-the-counter medications or scar creams in any such case as they can cause allergy and irritate the incision.
Keep the painkillers and anti-nausea medicines prescribed by your doctor ready prior to the surgery so that you have them around when you are back home post-surgery. Also, do not use the medication with an empty stomach.
Besides this, wait for a few weeks for the incision to heal before you start to apply ointment on the scars. Don’t use pain medication on an empty stomach. Eating crackers, toast, or other small items may prevent nausea and make the recovery after breast augmentation a smooth process for you.
- Wait for the appropriate time to resume exercise and physical activity.
Stay away from strenuous exercise including weightlifting after the surgery at least for six weeks since doing so may result in discomforts. However, to avoid possible physical and psychological weakness due to inactivity, consult your doctor on what type of mild workouts are fine for you. It will only be a matter of weeks before you are able to resume regular physical activities without any pressure or pain. Until then, keep in touch with your doctor with the progress on recovery after breast augmentation.
- Manage your sleep and take proper rest.
After the surgery, your body needs rest for a few days until it regains its strength. It is crucial that you are kind to it and listen to what it needs. Have a quiet room and a comfortable bed, recliner or sofa for yourself to take a sound, peaceful sleep. Make sure you sleep on your back or sides so as to keep your implants in shape.
Besides these tips, have regular appointments with your doctor to discuss the recovery, detect any issues or ask any questions that you may have. Most importantly, stay optimistic!
